Things to do in Santa Cruz and the Peninsula coast

5 hours south of San Francisco on Highway 1, built around the Beach Boardwalk, an oceanfront amusement park operating since 1907 where individual ride tickets run roughly $6-8 and all-day wristbands are usually cheaper if you plan on riding more than five or six times.

The town has a genuine surf culture, not a manufactured one: Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point draw serious surfers year-round, and the water stays cold, commonly 12-16°C (54-61°F), so a wetsuit is standard even in summer. On the way down or back, Half Moon Bay on the Peninsula coast makes a natural stop rather than a separate trip, with its own working harbour and a Saturday farmers' market.

Coastal fog can linger into early afternoon on this stretch even when San Francisco itself has cleared.
