Things to do in Lake Tahoe
5 to 4 hours by car from San Francisco via I-80, longer with snow chains or holiday traffic. The lake splits into two distinct sides: South Lake Tahoe, denser and casino-adjacent on the Nevada border, and the quieter North Shore around Tahoe City and Truckee.
Winters bring downtown ski resorts with lift tickets commonly running $150-220 a day; summers swap skis for beaches, hiking and boating, with water temperatures rarely climbing past 18-20ยฐC (65-68ยฐF) even in August.
As a day trip from San Francisco, expect roughly 7-8 hours of driving alone, so plan on one activity, not a full ski or beach day, unless staying overnight.
