Things to do in Oakland and the East Bay
Oakland sits across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco and is its own city, not a neighbourhood, with a separate downtown built around Lake Merritt and the working waterfront at Jack London Square. BART reaches Oakland directly from San Francisco in about 20-25 minutes, so a car is not needed for this trip, unlike the toll-bridge drive (about $8.50 westbound into San Francisco). Berkeley, home to UC Berkeley and the shops of Telegraph Avenue, is a further 10-15 minutes north on the same BART line. A single Clipper fare covers the ride, and both downtown areas are walkable once you arrive.
